5 Facts You Need To Know About Cockroaches If Your House Is Infested By Them
Most households have been infested with cockroaches once at least. They are nocturnal creatures which work at night. If you spot a cockroach at daytime, then it may indicate an infestation. They are usually spotted in kitchens and bathrooms, hiding behind fridges, inside sinks, etc. They are known to flatten themselves in order to hide in unusual places.
A cockroach goes through three stages in its life cycle. These stages are elaborately mentioned below to help you understand the basics of cockroaches.
Egg Stage
The first stage in a cockroach’s life cycle is the stage where eggs are produced. An adult female cockroach can produce about ten to forty eggs at the same time. These eggs are protected in a special case called ootheca. The ootheca may be placed in some safe location or may be carried around by their mother. The shape of these eggs is similar to that of kidney beans or a purse. Mothers usually prefer placing the eggs after carrying them for sometimes near some source of food. The length of this stage depends on the type of species the cockroach belongs to.
An Egg Can Take 103 Days To Hatch
The time an egg takes to hatch may differ according to different types of cockroaches but on an average, it may take about 103 days. The cockroach population grows really fast due to their ability to lay a lot of eggs at a time.
Cockroaches Are Few Of The Fastest At Reproducing
Cockroaches are quick at reproducing but this speed depends independently on their classification. German cockroaches are the quickest of them all and can produce nearly four to eight capsules of eggs in their entire lifespan. These capsules are known to contain at least 38 to 40 eggs each. The speed at which they reproduce also depends on factors like the climate and temperature. If provided with ideal conditions, cockroaches can multiply really fast.
Nymph Stage
These eggs hatch due to the pressure exerted by hatchlings within. Once they hatch, the cockroaches enter into what is called the nymph stage. During this stage, the nymph begins with a bright white color. As they breathe air, they grow in size and harden as well. Their color begins to grow darker within hours. They slowly become grayish-brown and darken as time passes. It may take a few months or even a year for the nymph to fully develop into the adult stage. Nymphs are quite the same as adult cockroaches.
The German variant of cockroaches is about 3 mm long after they hatch. Once they darken, they are mostly uniform in color and have a light spot on their backs. The nymph stage of American cockroaches slowly develops into red adults. Nymphs grow into adults by shedding cockroach skins multiple times and this process is referred to as molting. This process of growing into adults is again subject to their surroundings and susceptibility to different diseases. The average time a cockroach spends as a nymph is 15 months.
Adult Stage
Once the final layer of skin sheds, the cockroaches grow into adults which provides them with a new physical appearance. Adult cockroaches are capable of flying with the help of their newly formed wings and also they can reproduce now. Adult American variants of cockroaches have an estimated lifespan of one year. The size of cockroaches varies according to their species. The largest cockroaches found are the American and Oriental variant measuring more than an inch. The German cockroaches are only about half an inch long.
The wings that cockroaches develop allow you to distinguish between an adult and a nymph cockroach. Female cockroaches usually survive longer than their male counterparts. The male American cockroach is known to live for 362 days while females live for 700 days.
Have You Seen A Cockroach Sleep And Other Details About Their Sleeping Cycle
Cockroaches do sleep but their sleeping cycle is very different from ours. You would have always discovered them in the middle of the night, scurrying about in your kitchen and sometimes in toilets as well. A cockroach follows what is called a circadian rhythm and this is also followed by human beings. In fact, most organisms follow the circadian rhythm which means that the rhythm is 24 hours long. This rhythm of cockroaches does include a period for resting.
There are three types of activities that cockroaches are known to follow: locomotion, movement of limbs and antennae without locomotion, and immobility. They are active for 4 hours after it becomes dark and continue to be immobile after that. This state is what is considered sleep. They are nocturnal animals meaning that they look for food and mate at night. Unlike humans, cockroaches aren’t known to shut eyes in order to sleep for the reason that they do not have eyelids. They rest during daytime and energize themselves for work at night.
Can Cockroaches Live Decapitated And How?
Cockroaches are known to survive almost anything including surviving a nuclear bombing. This statement comes from the fact cockroaches can survive without heads.
In fact, they can survive for several weeks after being decapitated. The reason why human beings cannot stay headless is that you would bleed so much that it would cause your death and it would also mess with your blood pressure.
Human bodies breathe using their mouth which is coordinated by the brain and therefore breathing would eventually stop. Not just that, it would obviously not allow you to consume food.
However, cockroaches are different in all aspects as they have a different anatomy altogether. They do not face issues of blood pressure as they do not have tiny capillaries and also their necks clot in some time. This doesn’t cause too much blood loss. Since they are cold-blooded, they rarely use energy for the purpose of heating themselves and can survive on one meal for weeks together. The head also can keep moving for hours and if provided with nutrients it can last for even longer.
A Few Other Tips:
If you look around for signs of infestation, you must observe the above-mentioned details about cockroaches. Also, be on a lookout for roach feces, unpleasant odor, and eggs. These are clear indications that your house is infested with cockroaches. One of the reasons for this may be unhygienic conditions so try to keep your house clean and maintain sanitary conditions. If you discover that your house is infested, then the best solution is to contact pest control at the earliest. They can help you get rid of cockroaches easily but it is important to maintain clean surroundings in the future to avoid them from reappearing.
